  • Did you know there is a difference between light and dark rosin? If you live in a warm climate, a light (harder) rosin will be a better choice for you. Useing a dark (softer) rosin can be too sticky in a warm climate. On the flip side, if you live in a cold climate, then definately choose the dark rosin. Some violinists switch between dark and light rosins depending on the season. Ultimately you should experiement and search for a rosin that gives you the grip you need while producing a clear sound. A commen mistake of students is to apply far too much rosin, resulting in a thick and unclear sound accompanied by clouds of rosin dust! If you apply rosin regularly to your bow, try drawing your bow hairs across the rosin 5 or 6 times. This should be adequate.  If you find that your rosin just does not cling to you hair no matter how much you apply, it could be an indication that its time for a re-hair.
