Lets talk about instrument rentals!

WHY RENT?

Renting a violin is the easiest way to begin, without stepping into a large purchase of an instrument. Renting a violin gives you time to experience the new world of music lessons and to assess whether this new activity is a good fit for your family. When you begin renting from Prairie violins, we ask for a 3 month rental commitment up front.

PICKING UP YOUR INSTRUMENT

Before making an appointment with us, be sure to secure a lesson spot in the studio of a recognized string teacher.

You may save time by paying for your rental on line and printing out your rental contract before coming to the shop.

Its very important to bring your child who will be taking music lessons. Unless you have already met with your new teacher and have been sized for an instrument, we will need to do a proper sizing when you arrive.

After fitting your child with the correct size of instrument, it will be placed in a case with a bow and rosin. If your teacher has requested that Naomi fit your child with a sponge and chin-rest, we will do that at the same time. There is an extra charge for sponges and specialized chin-rests.

Once the rental contract is completed, signed and the rental payment is complete, you are free to leave the shop with your new rental instrument.

We ask that you do not unpack your new rental or play with it until your first lesson. Your teacher will show you the correct way to handle the instrument in order to avoid damage.

In special cases, your teacher may have already picked up everything you need and will do all the sizing at your first lesson. In this case, you will pay for the rental on line and scan a copy of the contract to us via email.

PURCHASING AND TRADING

After taking several months of lessons you may decide to purchase your instrument instead of continuing to pay rent each month.

PURCHASING YOUR INSTRUMENT

To help you, we offer up to 6 months of 100% of rental monies paid to credit towards your purchase.

TRADING YOUR INSTRUMENT

Once you own your instrument its yours to sell privately if you wish, or you may choose to trade it in at our shop.  If you choose to trade with us and your instrument is in perfect condition, we will give you 70% of the instrument's value in credit towards your next instrument.  If your instrument or bow needs repairs, new strings or re-hair, that cost is subtracted from your credit.

HOW TO CARE FOR YOUR RENTAL

Once you leave the shop with your rental instrument, you assume the responsibility for caring for it. Any damage caused by accidents, neglect or climate exposure are your responsibility to pay for.  Any strings that break or need to be replaced are your costs.  Any normal issues like a mechanical glitch (ex:  a bow that won't wind up or a slipping peg) is our responsibility to fix for you.

In order to protect your instrument from avoidable damage, we request the following:

  • When not practicing, always keep your instrument in its case

  • Always unwind the bow when not practicing

  • Always clean the rosin dust off your instrument after practicing

  • Never leave the case / instrument where a younger sibling or pet may find and play with it.

  • Students must learn to not dig the tip of their bow into carpet or bang it on any hard service. Doing so will easily damage the tip, resulting in a costly repair.

  • Students should also learn to only walk with their instrument in 'rest position' and to never run.

  • Never leave your instrument in a car that is too cold (below 5 degrees) or two hot (above 20 degrees). In general its best not to ever leave your instrument in a car, but if you must, be sure your car is locked and cover the instrument case with a blanket or place in the trunk so its not visible.

  • Last, but not least, never, ever leave your instrument sitting on a chair, couch, bed or floor.
